Five Peaks at Wintergreen

It’s surprising that, in a small village like Nellysford, so many restaurants thrive.  But choices of ‘where to eat’ have proliferated along with the breweries, wineries, cideries, distilleries, and local music and competitive sports events in Nelson County.  The Wintergreen Resort maintains some half dozen eateries, from deli-style to relatively formal establishments.  Most of the breweries include a restaurant on-premises.   The list of restaurants below is pretty complete, and is focused on Nelson County businesses.  If you’re feeling adventurous, Charlottesville is home to many world-class restaurants (some of our favorites include the C&O, Bizou, Zocalo, and Ten, but check out these, and this for a more complete listing).   Nearby Staunton is becoming a Locavore destination, and an easy 40 minute drive from Five Peaks.

Here is our list of local restaurants.  Subject to change as chefs come and go, of course.  Feel free to let us know your experience with any (or all) of them, so we can inform future guests of Five Peaks!

Devil’s Backbone Brewery and Restaurant … About a 10 minute drive south of the Village of Nellysford. Award winning beer (the fastest growing brand in the United States), good food, and a great atmosphere make the Devil’s Backbone a must-try.

Oceanwide Seafood Bar & Grill has been selling fresh seafood from a storefront at the IGA shopping center just down the hill from Five Peaks.  As of July, 2014, they are serving dinner as well!  Friends attended the opening of the restaurant in early July, and declared the food made them homesick for N’Awlins.  Their Facebook page says “Oceanwide Seafood Bar and Grill features all things Low Country in a laid back atmosphere. Nothing fancy. Just plain good.” As of July 2014, their hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12 to 7, Saturday, 9 to 5, and Sunday, 12 to 9.  434-361-0040.

Basic Necessities…. A lovely selection of french wine and cheese, fresh baked goods, and a wonderfully funky dining experience.

The Rockfish Baking Company – Hooray!  A little bakery just down the hill from Five Peaks has opened (as of December 2014) serving fresh baked goodies and coffee, located in the IGA shopping center at the center of Nellysford.  Our friend Coral Kemp is proprietor and just a fabulous baker – and person for that matter.  So pop down the hill and grab your morning munchies and coffee while they’re open (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 9am to 6pm; Saturdays 10am to 2pm.) 434-218-7762

Wild Wolf Brewery and Restaurant … a great experience with good food, very nice inside and outdoor dining spaces, and the biggest Koi pond in Nellysford.  Great local beer, play areas for the kids, and live music most nights.

The Copper Mine Bistro at Wintergreen Resort (on the mountain – casual to semi-formal dining)

The Edge Restaurant at Wintergreen Resort (on the mountain – casual dining with great views of the ski slopes)

Stoney Creek Bar and Grill (in the valley, just down the hill)  Great outdoor dining in season, overlooking the golf course from an awesome terrace.  Live music most weekends.

Margarita’s – (434) 218-7767 – [update July 2016 – guests have reported that the quality of Margarita’s food is not up to par.  A quote “I would not venture to Margarita’s Mexican restaurant unless one has an affinity for food served out of a can.”] serves Mexican food, and margaritas! Reasonable prices and good size portions.  Just down the hill, in the village of Nellysford (5 minutes from Five Peaks).

Giuseppes Ristorante Italiano Vito’s Restaurant used to be at this location. We’ve heard good things about it. Their website link is kind of off-and-on, but they also have a facebook page.

The Rockfish One Fifty-One Pub Family friendly restaurant with a great playground for the kids, and a huge selection of microbrews for the grown-ups. They offer free wifi and sports on the wide screen.  From their website:  “We are striving to provide an atmosphere that is family and kid friendly, with good food, cold beverages and scheduled entertainment for all to choose from.”  About 18 minutes north from Five Peaks.

Blue Ridge Pig Famous local Barbeque joint. The locals all know this place.  Bill Clinton came through Nellysford, according to local legend, and declared the pork ribs “awesome”.  A Nellysford tradition featuring really good barbeque.  Michael’s favorite is the smoked turkey croissant with everything.

Chirio’s Pizza – (434) 361-9188 – Just down the hill in the village of Nellysford.  They do a good thin and crispy New York crust.  Be sure to ask for the extra thick crust if that’s your fancy.

Blue Mountain Brewery and Restaurant We love this place. Especially wonderful at sunset, but get there early … the best seats fill up quickly. Very good pub food, awesome atmosphere, happy people. A great Rockfish Valley experience, and very kid-friendly. And your dog is welcome as well if you’re happy to sit outside.  About a 20 minute drive from Five Peaks.

Lovingston Cafe has been a favorite dining spot for many years. It’s located in Lovingston, about 25 minutes from Five Peaks.

Vito’s Italian Grill Vito’s had a satellite restaurant here in Nellysford for a year or two (it is now Giuseppe’s – see it above), but have retreated to their original location in Lovingston. With a loyal following of local diners, you may find it worth the drive – about 30 minutes from Five Peaks.
